Calle Campers is based in Stirling Road, Doune, FK16 6AA β a perfect launching point for Scotland's greatest adventures. All distances and drive times below are calculated from our front door, so you know exactly what to expect from the moment you pick up your van.
Scotland's answer to Route 66 β and arguably more beautiful
The North Coast 500 is Scotland's most celebrated road trip β a 516-mile circular route that hugs the dramatic northern coastline, passing through some of the most jaw-dropping landscapes in Europe.
Starting and finishing in Inverness, the NC500 takes you through rugged Highland passes, past pristine white-sand beaches, ancient castles, soaring mountains and remote fishing villages that feel untouched by time. It's a route that demands you slow down, breathe it all in and go back for more.
From Doune, head north on the A9 to Inverness β around 2 hours β and begin one of the greatest driving experiences of your life. Allow at least 7 nights to truly do it justice, though many people go back for more.
Scotland's first national park β and practically on our doorstep
This is the route closest to our hearts at Calle Campers β and the one that inspired the whole adventure. Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park begins almost literally at our front door in Doune.
Scotland's first national park offers a breathtaking mix of glittering lochs, ancient forest, cascading waterfalls and charming Highland villages. Whether you want a peaceful weekend escape or a week of exploration, this is a route you'll want to return to again and again.
Start in Callander β the "Gateway to the Highlands" β just 35 minutes from Doune, and explore at whatever pace suits you. Head south to the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond, west to the Cowal Peninsula or north into the heart of the Trossachs. Every road leads somewhere spectacular.
Otherworldly landscapes that stop you in your tracks
No list of Scottish road trips is complete without the Isle of Skye. This magical island β connected to the mainland by the famous Skye Bridge β offers landscapes that look like they belong in another world entirely.
The Cuillin mountains, the Quiraing, the Old Man of Storr, the Fairy Pools β Skye has become one of Scotland's most iconic destinations, and for good reason. Every corner reveals something extraordinary. From Doune, head northwest through Glen Coe and Fort William before crossing to Skye via the bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh.
For an extra adventure, take the Mallaig to Armadale ferry β it adds drama to the journey and gives you the opportunity to travel the legendary Road to the Isles through some of Scotland's most breathtaking scenery.
Scotland's secret β rolling glens and ancient history, right on our doorstep
Perthshire is one of Scotland's best-kept secrets β and it begins almost at our front door. Known as "Big Tree Country", this rolling green landscape of glens, river valleys, waterfalls and ancient Pictish stones is perfect for a 2β4 night escape without the crowds of more famous routes.
Head east into Angus and the dramatic glens open up β Glen Clova, Glen Esk and Glen Prosen offer outstanding walking, wild camping and solitude that's hard to find elsewhere in Scotland. Continue north and you'll reach the southern edges of the Cairngorms National Park.
This is the route we recommend for first-timers, shorter hires or anyone who wants to experience Scotland's beauty without long drives. Everything here is accessible, beautiful and surprisingly undiscovered.
From shimmering freshwater lochs to wild Atlantic coastlines
Scotland is defined by its water β and nowhere else in Britain comes close to the sheer variety and beauty of its shores, lochs and hidden bays. From Loch Lomond just 22 miles from our door in Doune, to the white-sand beaches of the Outer Hebrides over 3 hours north, and the wild Atlantic coastline of Assynt beyond that, Scotland's waterscapes span the entire country.
Loch Lomond is practically on our doorstep β just 35 minutes from Doune β and offers a perfect introduction to Scottish loch life. Head further north and you'll find Loch Maree, described by Queen Victoria as one of the most beautiful places she'd ever seen, and Loch Torridon, nestled beneath some of Scotland's most ancient mountains.
On the coast, the Isle of Harris boasts Luskentyre Beach β frequently voted one of Europe's best beaches, with turquoise water and white sand that will stop you in your tracks. Further north, Achmelvich Bay in Assynt is Scotland's secret Caribbean β a tiny, perfect crescent of white sand and crystal-clear water that most visitors never find.
From gentle ridges to the UK's highest peak β Scotland's mountains reward every level
Scotland's mountains are among the most dramatic and rewarding in the world β and you don't need to be an experienced climber to experience them. The Trossachs hills begin just 30 minutes from Doune, Glencoe is around an hour away, and Ben Nevis β the UK's highest peak β is roughly 90 minutes north. The Cairngorms and Assynt add another hour beyond that, each offering increasingly wild and remote terrain.
Ben Nevis β the UK's highest peak at 1,345m β is an unmissable challenge, but the views from the summit on a clear day are simply extraordinary. For something more accessible, the Pentland Hills near Edinburgh or the rolling hills of the Trossachs offer fantastic days out without the technical demands of the higher Munros.
Glencoe is arguably Scotland's most dramatic valley β a place of ancient geology, Jacobite history and staggering beauty. The drive through the glen alone is worth the trip, but for those who venture out on foot the rewards multiply. Further north, the mountains of Assynt β Suilven, Stac Pollaidh and Quinag β rise like ancient sentinels from the flat moorland in shapes found nowhere else on earth.
Scotland in winter is a different world entirely β and utterly magical
Scotland transforms in winter. Snow-capped peaks, frost-covered glens and crisp Highland air create a landscape of extraordinary beauty. Glenshee ski centre is just over an hour from Doune, Cairngorm Mountain around 1 hour 20 minutes, Glencoe Mountain Resort about 1 hour 15 minutes, and Nevis Range near Fort William around 1 hour 30 minutes β all well within a morning's drive.
Scotland has five ski centres ranging from the accessible slopes of The Lecht to the serious terrain of Glencoe Mountain Resort. The Cairngorms offer the largest ski area in the UK β vast snowfields, challenging runs and the extraordinary subarctic plateau that remains one of the wildest places in Britain.
But winter in Scotland isn't just about skiing. The mountains offer outstanding winter hillwalking for those with the right kit and experience. Frosted glens, iced waterfalls and snow-dusted forests create some of the most photogenic scenery imaginable. A campervan in winter Scotland β with your diesel heater humming and snow falling outside β is an experience like no other.
Harris, Mull, Arran, Islay & beyond β island life like nowhere else
Scotland's islands are a world apart. Over 900 islands dot the coastline β each with its own character and landscape. Arran is the closest, with the ferry from Ardrossan just an hour from Doune. Mull and Islay depart from Oban, about 90 minutes away. For the Outer Hebrides β Harris, Lewis and the most dramatic scenery β the Ullapool ferry is around 2 hours 30 minutes from Doune.
A campervan is the perfect way to explore the islands. Take the CalMac ferry from Oban β just 90 minutes from Doune β and you can be on Mull, Islay or Colonsay within hours. Mull offers everything from white-tailed eagle sightings to the magical multicoloured harbour of Tobermory. Islay is whisky country par excellence, with eight working distilleries and peat-smoked drams that warm you from the inside out.
For the ultimate island adventure, head to Harris and Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. The standing stones of Callanish rival Stonehenge in scale and mystery, while Luskentyre Beach offers what many consider the most beautiful stretch of sand in Europe. The pace of life here is slower, the skies are bigger and the Atlantic horizon seems to go on forever.
Pick your van, choose your route, and let the adventure begin. We're here to help you plan the perfect Scottish escape.
